Teachers distribute virtual elementary curriculum

PARKERSBURG - Wood County Schools began distribution of 900 printed elementary school curriculum packets Friday for Wood County virtual school students.

The district set up distribution points at the three public high schools, with each packet containing the first half-semester curriculum for the 2020-21 school year. Wood County Schools is using its own teachers for the elementary classes for West Virginia Learns virtual school

Director of Curriculum and Instruction Christie Willis said it is yet another example of how massive an undertaking the 2020-21 school year is for Wood County Schools.

“It is as if we are running two separate school systems,” one online and one brick-and-mortar, Willis said, “and the Central Office is running a virtual elementary school.”

More than 1,800 Wood County Schools students are enrolled in the West Virginia virtual school program this year, with about half of those being elementary school students. Officials made the decision to have those classes taught by teachers based in Wood County. Secondary schools classes are administered and monitored by teachers from throughout West Virginia.

The district will provide another opportunity to pick up packets from 1-3 p.m. Monday in the parking lot behind the Wood County Schools Central Office at 1210 13th Street in Parkersburg.
